Opening EXR Files

Exr-IO offers a variety of options when opening OpenEXR files.

To open an OpenExr file in Photoshop using Exr-IO, you can use three methods:

Open (Ctrl+O) or Drag&Drop

The most common was is the default “Open” image or Drag&Drop in Photoshop will open the OpenExr files with Exr-IO Plugin.

In case you can not see the Exr-IO Dialog after opening an Exr image, Exr-IO is either not properly installed or it has been overwritten as primary OpenExr file loader by some other plugin you have installed. In this case procede to the Open As… (see below) work-around or go to [Troubleshooting](https://docs.3d-plugin.com/exr-io/troubleshooting/ “Troubleshooting” to fix it).

Open As (Alt+Shift+Crtl+O)

In case you have installed in Photoshop other OpenEXR Plugins, it may happen that they get prioritized in the image opening process and take over the import process instead of Exr-IO plugin. It is recommended to uninstall the other plugins or force Photoshop to explicitelly open the desired file using exclusivly Exr-IO. To do this, use “File/Open As…” and pick explicitely the “Exr-IO” as extension, in order to open the file with Exr-IO.

In most cases the opened images will be fine with the default options and changes should only be necessary for specialized uses or to fix rare problems. The dialog can be disabled with the ‘Always show this dialog’ checkbox to open images faster without manual confirmation. In the case any options become relevant in the future the hidden dialog can be re-enabled with a button in the Exr-IO information window (Help -> About Plug-ins -> Exr-IO) - see image below.
