Usage

Unwrella 3dsMax UI
Unwrella is designed to solve one of the most time-consuming tasks in 3D production: creating clean UVs for **complex, irregular, and high-poly geometry**.

Modern workflows rely on dense meshes and detailed assets that are difficult or impossible to unwrap manually. Unwrella removes this bottleneck completely.

There is no need to:

  • manually place seams
  • rearrange UV islands
  • optimize layouts by hand

With a single click, Unwrella analyzes the geometry, generates seams, unwraps the mesh, and packs the UVs efficiently.

The Organic mode is ideal for complex, irregular shapes, where traditional workflows fail.
The Hard Surface mode is optimized for architectural and mechanical assets, delivering fast and clean results.

For specialized cases, Projection Unwrapping allows you to unwrap only visible areas—saving valuable UV space in environment and scene-based workflows.

Unwrella also integrates advanced UV packing, ensuring optimal texture usage even for large scenes with thousands of UV islands.

Generate UVs instantly, refine only if needed.

Basic Workflow

The Unwrella workflow in Maya is simple and fast:

Load the Plugin

Make sure the Unwrella plugin is loaded:

👉 Windows → Settings/Preferences → Plug-in Manager

Enable:

  • Loaded
  • (optional) Auto Load

Select Your Object

Select the mesh you want to unwrap in the viewport.

Open Unwrella

Switch to the UV Menu Set and open:

👉 UV → Unwrella

This opens the Unwrella interface.

Choose Unwrap Mode

Select the appropriate mode depending on your geometry:

  • Organic Mode → smooth, natural shapes
  • Hard Surface Mode → mechanical, angular objects

Generate UVs

Click Unwrap to automatically generate UVs.

Unwrella will:

  • detect seams
  • minimize stretching
  • create clean UV islands
  • pack UVs efficiently

Unwrap Modes

Unwrella provides two optimized modes:

Organic Mode

Best for:

  • characters
  • cloth
  • organic shapes

Features:

  • smooth UV flow
  • minimal distortion
  • fewer visible seams

Hard Surface Mode

Best for:

  • architecture
  • mechanical parts
  • hard-edged geometry

Features:

  • preserves sharp edges
  • structured UV islands
  • precise seam placement

UV Workflow in Maya

Unwrella integrates into Maya’s UV system:

  • Works directly with UV sets
  • Creates or overwrites UV layouts depending on your setup
  • Fully compatible with Maya UV Editor

👉 Best practice:

  • Keep original UVs in one set
  • Generate new UVs in a separate UV set

Seam and Distortion Control

Unwrella automatically balances:

  • seam placement
  • distortion minimization
  • UV island structure

You can fine-tune results by adjusting:

  • angle thresholds
  • smoothing behavior
  • unwrap mode

Packing

After unwrapping, Unwrella packs UV islands automatically:

  • maximizes texture usage
  • reduces empty space
  • keeps consistent texel density

Tips for Best Results

ℹ️
Clean geometry leads to better UV results.
  • Freeze transformations before unwrapping
  • Avoid non-uniform scaling
  • Clean up geometry (no overlapping faces, no broken topology)
  • Choose the correct unwrap mode

When to Use Unwrella

Unwrella is ideal for:

  • fast UV generation
  • large scenes
  • baking workflows
  • real-time assets (games, VR, mobile)

Limitations

  • Extremely complex or non-manifold geometry may require cleanup
  • Artistic UV layouts may require manual refinement

Summary

Unwrella in Maya provides:

  • fast automatic UV unwrapping
  • high-quality results
  • seamless integration into Maya workflows

Use it as a foundation for your UV work and refine only where needed.
