Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting

This section covers common issues when working with Flatiron, along with practical solutions.

⚡ Quick Diagnostic Flow

Use this quick guide to identify and fix the most common issues in seconds.

🖤 If your baked texture is completely black

👉 Use renderer-specific bake elements → For V-Ray: use V-Ray render elements, not default ones

🌑 If your textures are too dark or have wrong colors

👉 Check gamma settings → Set bitmap gamma to 1.0 or disable gamma correction

âš ī¸ If Single Pass baking gives incorrect results

👉 Switch baking mode → Use Multi Pass instead

📏 If UVs look stretched or incorrectly scaled

👉 Reset object transforms → Use Utilities → Reset XForm

đŸŽĨ If baked result differs from V-Ray render

👉 Check render settings → Disable VFB color corrections → Avoid Light Cache → Use Irradiance Map or Brute Force

🌐 If network render does not merge textures

👉 Check connection / workflow → Use Manual Merge after rendering is complete

🧩 If UV packing does not behave as expected

👉 Check workflow → Collapse modifiers before using Pack Existing

🎨 Baking & Rendering

đŸ”Ĩ Baked texture is completely black

❌ Problem

The baked result is completely black.

💡 Solution

Check your bake element compatibility:

  • V-Ray → use V-Ray render elements
  • Default Scanline/Mental Ray elements will not work with V-Ray

âš ī¸ Incorrect results with Single Pass baking

❌ Problem

Single Pass baking produces unexpected results.

💡 Solution

Try switching to Multi Pass:

  • Single Pass → faster
  • Multi Pass → more stable for complex scenes

âš ī¸ Baked textures are too dark or incorrect in color

❌ Problem

Textures look too dark or colors are wrong.

💡 Solution

Gamma settings are incorrect:

  • Set bitmap gamma to 1.0
  • Or disable gamma correction in 3ds Max

âš ī¸ V-Ray bake differs from final render

❌ Problem

Baked result does not match V-Ray render.

💡 Solution

  • Disable V-Ray Frame Buffer color corrections
  • Avoid Light Cache

Use instead:

  • Irradiance Map
  • or Brute Force

🧱 UV & Geometry

âš ī¸ Objects are unwrapped with wrong proportions

❌ Problem

UVs appear scaled incorrectly.

💡 Solution

  • Select objects
  • Go to Utilities → Reset XForm

This fixes incorrect scaling from imported assets.

â„šī¸ How to pack existing UVs

❓ Question

How do I repack existing UVs?

💡 Solution

  1. Collapse UV modifiers
  2. Ensure UVs are finalized
  3. Use Pack Existing

👉 Only original UVs are packed (not newly generated ones)

🌐 Network Rendering

âš ī¸ Network render does not merge automatically

❌ Problem

Textures are not merged after rendering.

💡 Solution

Flatiron lost connection to Backburner.

Fix:

  • Use Manual Merge after job completion

âš™ī¸ Compatibility

â„šī¸ Supported 3ds Max versions

💡 Answer

  • Supported: 3ds Max 2015 → current

â„šī¸ Supported renderers

💡 Answer
