Paint Weights
Paint Tool
The Paint Tool allows you to interactively adjust weight assignments between bones and vertices by painting directly on the mesh surface.
It behaves similarly to the standard 3ds Max Paint Tool, so most users will already be familiar with its workflow.
By default, painting over the mesh increases the weight of the affected vertices relative to the currently selected bones.
Brush Controls
You can modify the behavior of the brush using the following key combinations:
-
ALT
Decreases weights instead of increasing them. -
SHIFT
Smooths weight differences between vertices within the brush radius.
Useful for creating clean transitions between adjacent vertices. -
CTRL + SHIFT
Adjusts the brush radius interactively without opening the options dialog. -
ALT + SHIFT
Adjusts the brush strength interactively without opening the options dialog.
Controls
Paint
Activates or deactivates the interactive paint mode.
When enabled:
- A brush gizmo appears at the cursor
- You can directly paint weights onto the mesh
- Changes are applied relative to the currently selected bones
Options
Opens the brush settings dialog, where you can adjust parameters such as size, strength, and falloff.
Ignore Exclusions
Controls how excluded bone/vertex pairs are handled during painting:
-
Enabled
Excluded vertices remain unaffected by painting -
Disabled
Painting can modify exclusion states:- Increasing weight → includes the vertex
- Reducing weight to 0 → excludes the vertex
Paint Quaternion Blend
In addition to weight painting, the paint tool can be used to adjust the blending between:
- Linear deformation
- Dual quaternion deformation
This allows you to fine-tune deformation behavior directly on the mesh surface.
